Year 7 B; The Demon Headmaster

In the book " The Demon Headmaster', the headmaster believes that discipline and control means that everyone behaves in an orderly fashion and things can be achieved more efficiently. According to him independence and individual freedom can lead to disorder.

Do you agree with the headmaster? why/why not?

What are your views on good teaching and learning mechanisms in a school?

  1. I think that freedom and independence should be given to all the students and to be given a chance on what they can do and so even though they are free they will behave in an orderly fashion. And so the school will not be so dull.
My views on good teaching and learning mechanisms in a school would be a good amount of extra-curricular activities so that the school would not be just boring and not too much that it would push back the studies and so the students won’t learn anything. And also the teachers are allowed to take the students fun periods like P.E. and Art.

    1. I agree with the headmaster in some reasons and disagree in some. There should be discipline and order as well as independence & freedom but excessive amount of both can lead to disorder and chaos in the school. In this case, the headmaster has exceeded the discipline and order in the school.

  3. I agree with the headmaster because like the headmaster I also feel that discipline and control means that everyone behaves in an orderly fashion and things can be achieved more efficiently. According to me independence and individual freedom can lead to disorder as if pupils have too much freedom, the school will be chaotic and loads of casualties will take place.

  4. I agree with him because having order and discipline means that the student will be afraid to get into trouble because the punishments are severe and everyone will do as their told this will lead to a disciplined school. This mentally disciplines a student but it isn’t very good. Mentally affecting a person or student mean that he will lose self-confidence and later he will not be able to face the world. My opinion is that power is needed but not too much because they do need some freedom.

  5. I totally disagree with the headmaster since; children should have their freedom and be independent. While they are hypnotized they don’t actually learn they just sit like a handful of sleepy children. The teachers are not doing anything also. The school maybe very organized but it just won’t do and the head only has one goal and that’s too rule the country,he is doing the wrong thing and I disagree.

  6. “The Headmaster is a marvelous man and this is the best school I've ever been to.” These lines were said by pupils who the Headmaster hypnotized. He is controlling them. I strongly disagree with this atrocious way of teaching. Discipline is a must and every pupil should obey the rules. That doesn't mean that he has the right to control people and not give them their independence. People are different and might behave differently; it is not like everyone is synchronized. By doing this you do not directly achieve anything. You need to obey rules, maintain discipline and respect people. A good teacher interacts with the students and gives them their freedom to do remarkable things. A good teacher organizes activities and makes the most boring topics attention-grabbing. I’d like to end with a quote. “Tell me and I forget. Teach me, I interact, learn and get involved.”

  7. I think I would agree with the demon headmaster but the most important thing for a boy or girl to be a good person is discipline and control is everything it is like a key and only discipline and control can open the door so yes I would agree with the demon headmaster.

  8. I agree in some reasons and disagree in some with the headmaster. There should be discipline in the school but not much of strictness. There should be freedom for kids to play and have fun. But excessive amount of both can lead to disorder. I think the headmaster was strict and didn't allow the kids to have fun.

  9. Even though I hate the headmaster I would agree to the headmaster I agree with the headmaster because if the children has freedom they will be destructive and disorder each good boy and must have a little discipline behavior is the key to a perfect school even though discipline and behaving is very tough it’s the only way to keep a school the best so I do agree to the headmaster.

  10. I agree a little with the headmaster because a little independence cannot lead to disorder but a lot can lead to disorder and I think the headmaster is wrong because he does not give freedom or independence even a little to the children which has a bad effect on the children.

  11. I prefer doing activities because when you do activities you get a memory of what has happened and have also experienced it. It also makes learning fun but even having fun requires power, because the students will get a little hyper and mess things up. Many subjects could use these activities and we can also go through the portion a little faster with a brief summary.

  12. I disagree because not all children use freedom in the wrong way. Not all children bring things which are not allowed in the school. Freedom is mainly given so that children enjoy their life. They are already pressured by homework. Example today a teacher took my cards and I dint know that you are not allowed to bring cards. If playing is allowed why we can’t bring card, it’s not like cards bring some black magic. This is not called freedom

  13. My views on good teaching and learning mechanisms in a school mean more extra-curricular activities more P.E and general knowledge periods and a chance for children to do things on their own so that they can learn something new.

  14. I do not agree with the headmaster that individual and freedom can lead to disorder in the school because if they are not given the freedom and independence the students cannot improve or develop their general knowledge on the topic they are learning on. They cannot always repeat the same thing again and again . It will be boring for the students. The students cannot show their true skills or show their talent on any subject. The school cannot participate in any competition. The school will always be dull.

  16. According to me, the headmaster is correct and wrong. Children have to have independence and freedom in school otherwise their talents and abilities will get spoiled. If children have excessive of freedom or independence anything can turn wrong and make a twist in the story. Teachers of the school must not be strict, angry unnecessarily to the pupil. Behaviors of students and teachers have to be appropriate

  17. According to me good teaching is where a teacher is kind, caring, lenient and allows students to express their views and thoughts. A good teacher always makes lessons very interactive thus giving a very hands-on experience. According to me the best learning mechanics are ICT based thus giving a very interactive way to learn. Activities and experiments are just as important as they give a very hands-on experience therefore making it fun and interesting to learn.

  18. My opinion is good teaching is all about attracting the students to learn and to gain knowledge. For doing so, there should be learning mechanisms but very balanced, or else the children will just slip out of control. For example, US and Dubai have those mechanisms in schools but what I like the most is the Promethean board. It is just perfect for students.

  20. I disagree with the head master since children should have freedom and be independent .They should be given a chance to show their given talent . My views on good teaching and learning mechanisms in a school would be a good amount of extra-curricular activities so that the school would not be just boring and not too much that it would push back the studies and so the students won’t learn anything

  21. According to me, there must be good learning mechanisms to make it more interesting for the pupils to learn. I would suggest that a school have to provide facilities of IPAD and laptop. But it must not be an excessive use in school. Use it wisely and properly so that it won’t be confiscated by teachers. I also suggest that a laptop has to be registered with internet so then children can browse it when necessary for studies.

  22. I do not completely agree with the headmaster because he believes in total discipline and treats the place like a military school. In this situation children will behave like robots and will not express themselves. At the same time too much of independence and freedom can be disastrous and can lead to chaos. They should always be a balance of some amount of discipline and freedom.

  23. I totally disagree with the headmaster. One need not be so harsh on children, there are better ways to control the pupil in schools. While I do completely agree that there should be set rules in the schools to follow, only then there will be discipline in the school. Comment by Arjun Subramanyam

  25. I agree and disagree with the headmaster. freedom must be given to every student but not much other wise students will take advantages of it. I think that internet is a good teaching mechanism

  26. I cannot really disagree or agree because both of them are very different in multiple situations. I disagree as in the book the rules were stated as 'you cannot play at school' this is very wrong as children should be able to enjoy their childhood because this is our time to have fun, as people say 'its much more fun to learn then to earn'. I also agree with the headmaster as if children are give too much freedom they begin to take advantage of parents and teachers and begin to disrespect them. i see this as a very big problem in the world as this is the thing that leads to school shootings. so i cannot decide whether to agree or disagree. to me the best way to teach a kid is be casual and explain everything in a manner where the child can comprehend everything that is being said. teachers should spend a little time of their period and get to know the child and think of a fun idea which will help each student learn and understand everything. this is the best method of teaching in my eye's.

  28. Dinah Glass moves in with Lloyd and Harvey Hunter and at first does not like them. Soon she discovers that at her new school, the Headmaster is very strange and she finds herself saying things like, "I think the Headmaster is a marvellous man and this is the best school I've ever been to". With the help of her new friends, SPLAT, the children at the school who are immune to the Demon Headmaster's hypnotic powers, she successfully stops the Headmaster's plot to hypnotise the country through the Eddy Hair Television Show and she gets adopted by the Hunters. I agree and disagree with the Head Master because I also feel that discipline and control means that every one behaves in an oldery fashion. According to me independence and individual freedom can lead to disorder if pupils have to much freedom. I also disagree with the Head Master, I know there should be discipline in school but not much strictness. There should also be freedom for pupils to play and have fun and show their talents. As Brandon Fernandes said internet is a good teaching mechanism.
